Water treatment resins

Different salts dissolve in water at different concentrations. These salts are decomposed to their constituent charged ions in water. Positively charged particles are called cation, while the negatively-charged ones are called anion. Presence of these ionic impurities in water heavily adversely affects the proper functioning of steam systems, and is essentially undesirable for all industrial applications.  
Water treatment resins include cationic positive charge and anionic negative charge. In response to ion exchange, the cations or anions present in the solution are replaced with the cations and anions in the resin.
Water treatment resins are categorized into four groups:
Strong cationic resins, weak cationic resins, strong anionic resins, weak anionic resins
The major and important use of resins is in water softening.
